Heather Brostron, primary directress (preschool/kindergarten teacher) at OakHaven Montessori School in O’Fallon, MO, describes to a group of parents how the fraction materials in a Montessori primary classroom work. Preschool and kindergarten age children (in OakHaven’s primary program) have fun working with the fractions, which also:
- introduces them to the concept of fractions: quantity, language, and symbol
- brings the concept of equivalence to their attention
- prepares them for the reading of fractions and for operations of fractions
- provides an introduction to operations with whole numbers and fractions
