Introduction to the Decimal System (Golden Beads) – Primary Montessori Math

Heather Brostron, primary directress (preschool/kindergarten teacher) at OakHaven Montessori School in O’Fallon, MO, demonstrates to a group of parents how she would introduce the decimal system to a small child using the golden bead material. Preschool and kindergarten age children (in OakHaven’s primary program) receive this lesson from one of our AMI trained teachers, which:

- introduces the names of each category: units, tens, hundreds, and thousands
- shows the relationship between categories – relationship of ten
- provides a sensorial experience of relative sizes of categories
- extends the sensorial experience of the categories
