The Bigger "YES!"

“You can say “No” and smile only when there is a bigger “Yes” burning inside of you.”

~Dr. Stephen R. Covey

I don’t know about you, but I am swamped today. At work, there are people who need answers from me that I should have gotten to them last week, great suggestions that I really need to act on, supplies that I forgot to get that need to be bought right now, bills that need to be paid, and children who all want to show me their work and give me a hug. All that is in addition to the 4 meetings on the books, the 9 phone calls that need to be made, and the 54 emails that magically stacked up over the last day. And thank goodness no one will be coming to my house soon, because the cleaning is way behind and the laundry is piling up. And when in the world am I going to find time to clip my toenails before they poke through my socks, much less go work out like I really need to if this backache is ever going to let up? Aargh! Some days I just want to crawl back into bed, assume a fetal position, and turn the electric blanket up to 9.

Then, BAM! Just when I start to find comfort in my giving up strategy, that tiny little word “No!” slaps me in the face. No, I won’t give up. No, I will not spend another day with stomach muscles in knots. No, I will not spend one more minute today sucking my thumb and worrying about all the stuff that screams at me right now.

But how? How do I pull out of this frenetic pace that is consuming me? How do I choose among all these good things that are overflowing my life right now? How do I disappoint some of the people I care about by not doing everything they want from me? I just don’t know how to say “No!”

Okay, I remember now. What’s the name of this article? The Bigger “YES!” I’m focusing on the wrong end of the spectrum! YES, I want to be peaceful right now. YES, I want to be clear and laser sharp and the best “me” I can be right now. YES, I want to know that if I am meant to be on the 11:36 train off this planet tonight, I will have spent today making sure that the most important people in my life know how much I love them and that the things I choose to do today will be those things that I most value. YES, today will be a wonder-filled day.

Breathing is easier now and my back doesn’t seem to be hurting so much. The big “YES!” that is filling me makes me smile. And the word “No” slips across my smiling lips as I cancel two meetings, delete 42 emails, and decline 3 more requests to give feedback on the products we purchased last week. And now, I am going to quit typing and take a moment to call my two favorite people in all the world just to tell them how much I love them. Then, there are some children that need to be hugged and whose very beautiful work needs to be admired.

Hope you, too, have a wonder-filled “YES!” day!
