A common question among parents exploring education options in St. Charles County is, “What, exactly, makes a school ‘Montessori’?” The answer is more layered than you might think.
The truth is that the name "Montessori" was never trademarked. Any childcare center, preschool, or private school can put the name on their sign, but the interpretation of the approach can vary greatly from one classroom to the next. For families trying to make the best decision for their child, understanding these differences is an essential first step.
Humble Beginnings
Our educational approach had its start in the San Lorenzo district of Rome, Italy. Dr. Maria Montessori was a physician who had been studying child development and found remarkable success working with children who had been previously deemed uneducable.
In 1907, her first classroom,
Casa dei Bambini (Children's House), was created to serve the children of working-class families. It was within this environment that Dr. Montessori observed the children's natural development, refined her specialized materials, and established her revolutionary method. The success of her students quickly caught the attention of educators worldwide, and schools began opening across the globe.
Preserving the Integrity: Association Montessori Internationale (AMI)
As the movement expanded, Dr. Montessori realized the critical need for standardization. To preserve the integrity of her life's work, ensure teachers were comprehensively trained, and guarantee that materials were manufactured to exact geometric specifications, she founded the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) in 1929.
Today, AMI is headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and supports affiliated societies worldwide, including AMI/USA here in the United States. AMI is the original organization established by Dr. Montessori herself and is globally recognized for upholding the highest pedagogical standards and preserving her original methodology in its entirety.
At OakHaven Montessori School, our deep commitment to our students is reflected in our status as an AMI/USA Member School. For our families in Dardenne Prairie and O'Fallon, this means your child receives an authentic, uncompromised Montessori experience.
The Evolution of the American Montessori Society (AMS)
While Montessori education reached American shores in the early 20th century, its widespread popularity flourished in the 1960s. Nancy McCormick Rambusch, an American educator trained at an AMI center in London, was appointed to represent AMI in the United States. She opened the Whitby School in Connecticut and championed the growth of the movement.
Over time, Rambusch and her colleagues advocated for certain adaptations to help the method fit more seamlessly into the conventional American school culture, favoring structural flexibility. Leadership at AMI disagreed, maintaining that preserving the foundational principles in their entirety was essential to achieving the true developmental results for the child.
This difference in philosophy led the two groups to part ways, and Rambusch established the American Montessori Society (AMS) in 1960.
The Landscape of Montessori Schools Today
Because any school can use the name, programs generally fall into a wide spectrum of implementation—ranging from "Montessori-inspired" daycares that simply use a few of the wooden materials, to member schools affiliated with various national organizations.
At OakHaven Montessori School, we hold ourselves to the highest global benchmark of authenticity. We are proud to be an AMI Recognized school. To receive the certificate indicating that a program level is AMI Recognized, 100% of teachers must be AMI trained at that specific level, and every single one of the rigorous AMI pedagogical standards must be achieved. For our families in St. Charles County, this recognition is your assurance that our environments, multi-age groupings, uninterrupted work periods, and Guides are fully aligned with Dr. Montessori’s original, time-tested vision for the child's optimal development.
The OakHaven Commitment
When you walk through the doors of OakHaven, you are stepping into an environment designed to honor the child’s full potential. Our alignment with AMI standards ensures that your child’s Guide (teacher) understands the deep "why" behind every material, lesson, and behavioral milestone. We don't simply use the materials as puzzles or toys; we utilize them as a systemic pathway toward abstract thought, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.
If you are exploring local schooling options and want to feel the difference that an authentic environment makes, we are always here to help you navigate the process.
